  Skylar

  “What’s up, Skylar?”

Derrick’s voice made me jump. “Sorry! I didn’t know anyone was in here!” I said and turned to leave. I was at a “Beginning of Summer Party” at my best friend, Maci’s house. I’d come inside and snuck into the basement to get away from Kai. He was all over me and annoying the hell out of me.

“No worries.” Derrick smiled. I could barely see his face in the dark basement, but his smile still made my heart race.

Derrick was Maci’s older brother. Derrick was fantastic and perfect and everything I wanted. Derrick was eighteen, and I was only fourteen.

I paused before leaving the basement and asked, “Why are you sitting in the dark down here by yourself? It’s weird.”

Derrick laughed. “I was just checking my messages, and then I was going to play Halo. Why are you down here? Aren’t you enjoying the party that you and Maci spent your entire lives planning?”

I put my hands on my hips as Derrick switched on the TV. “We didn’t spend our whole lives planning it!” I said.

Derrick glanced over at me. “No, you definitely spent all twelve years of your lives planning that lame party.”

“Duh! We’re fourteen!” He was not going to make me sound even younger than I was.

“I know, Skylar. Take a deep breath.” Derrick laughed. “I’m just teasing you! Usually, you’re fine with it. Maci’s supposed to be the one that gets all mad at me.”

Maci and I had been best friends since the third grade, and I’d been in love with Derrick almost that long. Usually, he ignored us. Sometimes he made fun of us until Maci was crying, and their mom, Kate, had to yell at him.

“I’m not mad!” I scowled, and my hands were still on my hips.

Derrick stood to grab the Xbox controllers from the TV stand. “Cool, Skylar. You don’t seem mad.” He grinned at me and pointed at my face. “That’s for sure your happy face. So, you didn’t tell me why you’re hiding from your own party in our basement.”

I sighed and leaned against the wall. “It’s Maci’s party. I would have just put out a bunch of blankets, snacks, and a huge projector screen to watch movies. Maci made it all silly and girly.” I rolled my eyes. “Plus, Kai is annoying the hell out of me.”

Derrick collapsed back onto the couch. “Kai Wilson? Like, Ember’s little brother?” Ember was Derrick’s ex-girlfriend. I hated her.

  “Uh… yeah.”

Derrick laughed. “Well, if he’s anything like his sister, you’re right to steer clear.” He glanced over at me. “You wanna play?” He held up the extra controller.

My heart raced out of control. I didn’t know how to play Halo, but Derrick freaking Myles had just asked me to hang out with him. “Sure.” I shrugged, trying to play it cool. “It’s better than shoving Kai’s hand off my knee and listening to Maci’s summer party playlist.” I sat rigidly next to him on the couch.

Derrick laughed out loud. His gorgeous green eyes and dimples made me melt. “I promise I’ve had to hear Maci’s music way more than you have! I can’t wait to get out of here at the end of summer!” He passed me a controller.

Derrick was leaving for college in two and a half months. He was going to leave for college and take my heart with him. He was going to meet a sexy, sophisticated blonde — he always dated blondes — and marry her while I was still trying to hurry and grow up.

“Do you know how to play?” Derrick asked as the game started.

I shrugged. “How hard can it be? I mean, you figured out how to play it, so…”

Derrick grinned. “Rude, Skylar. All right, kid, if you’re so confident, show me what you got.”

I blew myself up within ten seconds.

After Derrick finished laughing at me, he gave me a few pointers, namely, don’t throw bombs when you’re standing in a corner, and we started again. Within twenty minutes, I was staying alive for a solid five. Within thirty minutes, I made my first kill shot.

“How do you like me now, punk?” I shoved Derrick. I was so into the game that I completely forgot for a second that it was him.

He laughed and shoved me back. “All right, kid. All right, it was a lucky shot. I’ll bet you twenty bucks you can’t do it again.”

I grinned and leaned forward. “Is that a firm deal?”

Derrick leaned forward, too, and glanced over at me, laughing. “Yes? I don’t know. I’m scared now.”

It took me a few minutes, but I snuck up on Derrick and took him out with my sniper rifle. I jumped up and did a victory dance. “What? I just owned your ass!” I laughed and held out my hand. “Pay up, bitch!”

Derrick burst out laughing and tossed his controller on the couch. “Did you just call me a bitch? Did you seriously just call me a bitch? Ten-year-olds aren’t supposed to have such dirty mouths!” He pulled his wallet from his back pocket and tossed a twenty at me. “Go buy yourself some new barbies, Skylar.”

I picked up the bill that had drifted down to the carpet. “Now I’m ten? I killed you in Halo, and that makes me younger?”

Derrick grinned and shrugged. “I don’t make the rules.”

“Yeah, no, you literally just made that rule.”

“Okay, let’s go again. If I kill you in one minute, I get the money back.”

“Deal.” I reached out to shake his hand. Thank God it was dark in the basement. He didn’t see me blush when he touched my hand.

Suddenly the light flipped on. Derrick and I blinked against the brightness that accosted our eyes.

“Skylar!” Maci glared at me. “What are you doing in here? Kai’s looking everywhere for you!” She glared at Derrick next. “Don’t you have your own friends to hang out with, dumbass? Why are you hanging out with mine?”

Derrick sighed. “I can’t help it if your friends think I’m cooler than you, Maci.”

  I stifled a grin.

“Skylar! Let’s go!” Maci smoothed her blue, sequined tank-top, and glared at her big brother.

“Yeah. Sorry. I just needed a little break from Kai.” I sighed and followed her toward the stairs.

“This isn’t over, kid!” Derrick called after me. “Next time you’re here — so, like tomorrow, because you’re always here — I’m getting my money back!”

I clutched the twenty dollar bill in my palm. I was going to frame it or use it to help pay for my own Xbox. I had to get better. I had to play with him again. “Not on your life, bitch.”

Derrick laughed. “I have never been called that twice in one night.”

I shrugged and grinned. “I’m just a lot of fun, Derrick.”

He turned back to the TV. “Whatever, Skylar.”

I followed Maci out to the back yard, where the speakers blared some Katy Perry song, and a bunch of dumb middle-schoolers giggled and stole each other’s phones.

Kai immediately caught sight of me and made a beeline toward me. I groaned quietly.

  “Hi, Skylar.”

  “Hi, Kai.”

  “You left.”

“Sure did.” I stared at my fingernails. “Well, I’m gonna go get a snack!” I started to walk away.

“Me too.” Kai was glued to my side and reaching for my hand. Did he think I was like, his girlfriend now?

I folded my arms. “We’re not dating, Kai.”

  He shrugged. “I know.”

God! He was so awkward! “Soooo, why are you trying to hold my hand?”

Kai just blinked his big blue eyes. “Because I like you.”

My mouth dropped open in shock. He just strung four words together! That must have been like some kind of record for him. I
closed my mouth. “I like someone else,” I said and walked away. I almost felt bad for Kai. He was cute — boring, but cute. He had nothing on Derrick Myles, though. Kai’s smile would never make my brain literally short out. His touch wouldn’t send chills down my spine. I would never lie awake at night thinking about him.

But Derrick was going away to college. Derrick would never really see me. It was stupid and embarrassing that I loved him.

  Three years later

  Derrick

As soon as I arrived at my parents’ house, I headed straight for the pool in their backyard. I wasn’t thrilled to be home for the summer, but my landlord was remodeling the entire student housing building, and I only had one online class. It just made sense to come home.

I tugged my shirt off when I reached the pool and slid out of my shorts and boxer briefs. My mom would give me shit for not putting on a bathing suit. She’d say, “Derrick James Myles! We don’t swim naked!” But who the hell was here to see me? It was the middle of the day, on a Tuesday. I dove in, totally nude, and the water felt incredible.

I did a few laps before I heard Maci’s irritating giggle. Oh shit. It was summer. She was out of school. I looked up to see her walking towards the pool in her little yellow bikini. She had a friend with her.

“Ew Derrick! Are you naked! Ew! Ew! Ew!” Maci covered her eyes and made a gagging sound.

I laughed and said, “I didn’t know you were home! Can you like, get me a towel or something?”

“You’re not supposed to go swimming naked!” Maci still had her eyes covered and seemed not to hear me.

Her friend held out the towel in her hands, with bright red cheeks. “You can use this one.”

I climbed out of the pool, covering my dick with one hand. I took the towel from Maci’s friend with the other. “Thank you.”

The girl wouldn’t look me in the eye.

“Whoa! Skylar?” I wrapped the towel around my waist and gaped at her.

“Yup.” She stared at the ground.

“Holy shit! I didn’t even recognize you!” I said. Skylar looked like she’d grown six inches! Even under her oversized t-shirt, I could tell she had a tiny little waist, long legs, and big, perky tits now. Her lips had filled out, too, and had her eyes always been that blue? Damn. Was Skylar — the skinny little Halo-owning brat — hot now?

Maci whined, “Are you covered yet? I do not want to see your dick today. That would like, ruin my entire summer!”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah. I’m covered. I will go put on a bathing suit. Skylar, I’m sorry if you saw anything.” I grinned at her.

  “Yup. I saw everything.”

“Gross, Derrick! I’m telling mom you flashed Skylar!”

I laughed and headed for the house. “Sorry, Skylar!”

She shrugged. “It was nothing impressive. I’ll probably forget about it by the time you get inside.”

I turned around and gaped at her. “Cool, so you’re still rude.”

Skylar smiled. “What made you think I wouldn’t be?”

I laughed and headed through the sliding door into the kitchen. Usually, hot girls were very nice to me. Typically, hot girls couldn’t get enough of my body.

I quickly put on a bathing suit and headed back out to the pool. I was suddenly very interested in catching up with hot little Skylar. When I reached the pool, I could hear Maci bossing Skylar around, like usual.

“Skylar, take off that dumb shirt. You look hot in your new swimsuit.” Maci lazily lounged on a chair.

Skylar shrugged. “I don’t think it’s really me. I think it’s too sexy, like borderline slutty.”

I took a seat on an open lounge chair.

Maci sat up and slid her sunglasses down. “That’s a good thing. Kai will lose his mind when he sees you!”

Skylar rolled her eyes. “I don’t want him to.”

“Derrick!” Maci threw an inflatable ball at me. “You’re a guy. Look at Skylar’s swimsuit and tell us if it’s hot or slutty.”

Skylar looked like she wanted to punch my sister.

I grinned and sat up. “All right, kid. I showed you mine. Now you show me yours.”

“Ew. Don’t be creepy about it.” Maci wrinkled her nose at me, then turned to Skylar. “Take it off!”

Skylar looked pissed but finally tugged the shirt off over her head. Technically, her light blue swimsuit was a one-piece, but it was so full of cut-outs that it almost covered less of her gorgeous body than a bikini would. I scanned her from head-to-toe. Her long, brown hair fell perfectly around her shoulders. The blue fabric of her bathing suit stretched across her tits and pushed them together, creating mouth-watering cleavage. Most of her tight stomach was exposed, and the bottom of the swimsuit sat low on her hips.

  Damn, Skylar.

I grinned at her. “Okay, turn around.”

She rolled her big blue eyes but slowly turned to let me examine her backside.

  “Move your hair,” I said.

Skylar glared at me over her shoulder but reached back to lift her hair. Damn. She had toned arms and some serious muscle definition in her back and legs. It was hot. But that ass! Her bathing suit hugged most of it, but it let just enough of that delicious ass hang out to make me hard.

I laughed to myself. Skylar Jones was giving me an erection. Who would have ever seen that coming? Suddenly I was grateful for the blowup ball that Maci threw at me. I placed it squarely over my dick to cover my arousal, and said, “Yeah, it’s slutty. Kai will love it, kid.”

Skylar groaned and grabbed her t-shirt. To say I was disappointed when she covered herself would be an understatement. Skylar said, “I told you, Maci!”

Maci just shrugged. “So be slutty. Who cares? You have that tight, sexy dancer body. You should show it off.”

That’s right. Skylar was a dancer. I vaguely remembered being forced to watch Maci and Skylar twirl on a stage in bright pink tutus. Maci gave up dancing by middle school, but Skylar made the high school dance team. I hadn’t seen her perform recently, but suddenly I wanted to see how that body could move.

“No.” Skylar glared at my sister. “Especially not for Kai. Maci, I. Don’t. Like. Him. I’m not going to date him just because he’s your boyfriend’s best friend.”

“Whoa! Boyfriend?” I sat up and gaped at Maci. My little sister drove me nuts, but I would punch any asshole that touched her and kill anyone that hurt her.

Maci rolled her eyes and smoothed her light brown hair. “Yeah, Derrick. Boyfriend. I’m in a serious relationship. You should try it sometime.”

I hadn’t dated anyone seriously since Ember — the high school girl that broke my heart. I wasn’t scared of relationships, though. It was just more fun to play the field. Wasn’t that the whole point of college?

I laughed and shook my head. “No, thanks. I don’t like being tied down. There are too many sexy girls in the world just to pick one.”

“Ew. You’re disgusting.” Maci put her sunglasses back on.

Skylar sat on the edge of a lounge chair and gave me a weird look. I couldn’t tell if she was disgusted or amused by me.

“So, who’s the boyfriend?” I asked.

Maci turned her head away from me, refusing to respond. Skylar answered instead. “It’s Blake Middleton.”

“Don’t know him,” I said. “Should I be worried?”

Skylar shrugged. “No, Blake’s a good guy.” Then she smiled at me. “Don’t worry, I’ve got Maci’s back, but it’s adorable that you love her.”

Maci sat up and wrinkled her nose at me. “You love me, Derrick? Weird.”

I laughed. “No. I hate you.” I tossed the inflatable ball back at my sister. I didn’t need it to hide my erection now that Skylar was all covered up.

Maci laughed out loud. “Aw, I hate you, too.” She stood and walked over to me, then bent down and planted a big sloppy kiss on my cheek.

“Gross! Your spit is on my face now!” I shoved Maci, and she fell backward
into the pool with a huge splash.

She emerged from the water, yelling at me. “Derrick! You just ruined my hair!”

Skylar was doubled over laughing. “Relax, princess!” She wiped a tear from her eye and continued laughing. “Isn’t the point of swimming to get wet?” When Maci just glared, Skylar sighed and said, “I’ll help you fix it before the guys get here.”

Maci climbed out of the pool with an angry pout. She walked over to me and wrung out her hair on my lap.

“Hey!” I laughed and jumped up.

“You’re never going to find someone to love you, Derrick!” Maci huffed and stalked toward the house. Skylar followed her, but turned around and grinned at me. She gave me a subtle thumbs-up and pulled the sliding door shut behind her.

  Skylar

  I saw Derrick’s dick.

  I saw Derrick’s dick.

I saw Derrick’s dick. Holy mother-fucking shit-balls. I hadn’t seen him for a solid year, and then first thing, bam. Dick. He was officially still the hottest guy I’d ever seen. But I’d never tell Maci.

“I hate my stupid brother!” Maci whined and tried to drag a comb through her wet, tangled hair.

“What are you crazy? Put some leave-in conditioner in your hair before you try to comb it out! Are you trying to rip all the hair out of your scalp?” I tossed a bottle of conditioner to Maci and shook my head at her.

Maci laughed. “What would I do without you, Sky?”

I shrugged and collapsed onto her bed. “You’d rip all of the hair out of your scalp for starters. Then you’d be dating ugly cheating losers.”

“Ugh. Love you, girl.” Maci frowned at her reflection in her vanity mirror. “Liam was the worst.”

About a year ago, I’d found Maci’s ex, Liam, at a party with his tongue down some girl’s throat. I’d grabbed him by the ear and told the girl to get lost before I beat her ass. Then I’d dragged Liam over to a chair, shoved him down, and said, “Call Maci right now, you little piece of shit!”
